Fish production in TN increased over the years

Union minister for fisheries and animal husbandry department Parshottam Rupala said on Friday that fisherfolk in TN could cultivate seaweed for a sustainable income when fishing alone didn’t meet their requirements. He also said that fish production in the state had increased over the years.
As part of the Sagar Parikrama Yatra, Union Minister for Fisheries Animal Husbandry and Dairying Parshottam Rupala along with MoS Dr. L Murugan interacted with fishers in Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi districts.
Sagar Parikrama is a program reflecting the far-reaching policy strategy of the government leading to the direct interaction with fishers and fish farmers to understand the issues coastal areas and problems related to fishermen.
During the interaction, the fishermen apprised the union ministers on various issues including the need for establishing the Harbour at Uvari Village. They also suggested that the department to be renamed as fishermen welfare department, according to a release.
Union Minister Rupala said that he had joined Sagar Parikrama to understand the profession, life, culture, current state of respected fishermen which would help him in preparing the policy for the betterment of the fishers and thanked everyone for providing their valuable inputs. He has also urged the fisherfolk on carrying out the PMMSY scheme and that it shall have a significant impact on the fisheries sector in India as it aims to enhance the production, strengthen coastal ecosystem and productivity of fish through the adoption of modern and scientific methods of fishing.

Minister of State Dr L Murugan addressed the gathering regarding the various schemes such as (PMMSY) and other multidimensional activities with major focus on increasing fisheries production and productivity (for both inland & marine). He highlighted the announcement made by Government in 2019 about setting up of separate Department of fisheries for which was immediately approved by Hon’ble Prime Minister.
The event was attended by at least 2000 people including fisherfolk and others involved in fisheries development and related activities.
