Yet again, Malayalam actor Shine Tom Chacko has become the center of attention for media industry here due to his involvement in a recent drug-related controversy. This incident marks his second entanglement with narcotics allegations, following a previous case in 2015.
On April 16, 2025, during a narcotics raid at a hotel in Kochi, Shine Tom Chacko allegedly fled the scene by jumping from a third-floor window. CCTV footage captured him running out of the hotel, where police suspected the presence of a drug dealer. Subsequently, he was arrested on April 19 under sections 27 (consumption) and 29 (conspiracy) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. After a four-hour interrogation, he was released on bail the same day.
The Kochi City Police have, however, collected samples, including blood, nail, and hair, from Shine Tom Chacko for forensic examination. These samples have been sent to a laboratory in Thiruvananthapuram, with results expected soon. The actor has allegedly admitted to drug use during police interrogation. However, police suspect he may have used substances to mask the presence of drugs during the medical examination.
Shine Tom Chacko is reportedly consulting legal experts to challenge the First Information Report (FIR) filed against him, according to recent reports. He also plans to proceed with legal steps after receiving the forensic examination results.
The incident has sparked discussions about drug use within the Malayalam film industry. A few days ago, Actress Vincy Aloshious filed a complaint against Shine Tom Chacko, accusing him of inappropriate behavior and substance abuse on set with the film’s Internal Complaints Committee as well as the Kerala Film Chamber. She has also publicly stated her unwillingness to work with individuals who misuse substances.
Kerala’s Law Minister has acknowledged the seriousness of the allegations and emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing such issues.
2015 Cocaine case: Acquittal after a decade
In January 2015, Shine Tom Chacko, along with four women, was arrested in Kochi for the alleged possession of approximately seven grams of cocaine. The prosecution claimed that the group had organized a gathering where the drug was consumed. However, in February 2025, the Ernakulam Additional Sessions Court acquitted all the accused, citing procedural lapses during the seizure and arrest. Back then, the court noted that chemical analysis reports showed no traces of cocaine in the blood samples of the accused.
As the investigation continues, the outcomes of the forensic tests and legal proceedings will play a crucial role in determining the next steps in this case.
Mollywood’s recurrent brush with narcotics

Actor Unni Mukundan emphasized the need for societal introspection, stating, “The fact that we still have to keep saying ‘Say No to Drugs’ again and again shows that we have failed somewhere as a society.” He participated in an anti-drug campaign in Kalamassery, where he, along with other industry professionals and law enforcement officials, pledged support against drug abuse. The event also saw CCF President Anil Thomas advocating for regular drug testing within the industry.
Producer Venu Kunnappilly, known for films like Mamangam and 2018, called for the exclusion of individuals involved in drug abuse and other misconduct from the film industry. He highlighted the negative impact such individuals have on film production and the industry’s reputation. Kunnappilly urged filmmakers and directors to proactively keep such individuals out during the early stages of film planning to avoid recurring controversies.
Even veteran actress Renjini noted a transition in substance use within the industry, stating that while alcoholism was previously prevalent on film sets, there has been a shift towards drug use in recent times. She expressed concern over this trend and its implications for the industry’s working environment.
