Meta is reportedly shifting its focus towards lighter mixed-reality (MR) devices, potentially launching a new headset codenamed “Puffin” by the end of 2026. This device aims to be significantly lighter than current Quest headsets, resembling bulky glasses and weighing around 110 grams. To achieve this, major components like the processor and battery might be housed in a separate “compute puck” carried by the user.
The Puffin headset is expected to run on Meta’s HorizonOS, similar to Quest devices, but will likely emphasize productivity and entertainment over immersive gaming. It reportedly won’t use handheld controllers, relying instead on eye-tracking and hand gestures for navigation, aiming for a more natural user experience.
This development suggests Meta might be shelving plans for the previously rumored Quest 4 models. The Puffin could become Meta’s main MR device later this decade, offering a more advanced spatial computing experience than the current Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, which lack displays and focus on camera and audio features. While details are still being finalized, the Puffin represents Meta’s push towards more accessible, everyday augmented reality, potentially competing with future Apple Vision products.
