The union government, led by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, is seeking support from all political parties to move an impeachment motion against Allahabad High Court Justice Yashwant Varma during the upcoming Monsoon session of Parliament, starting July 21. Rijiju emphasized that judicial corruption should not be viewed politically and aims for a collaborative effort.
The move follows an investigation into alleged corruption involving Justice Varma, initiated after a fire incident at his Delhi residence reportedly led to the discovery of burnt cash. A Supreme Court-appointed committee indicted the judge. Despite being urged to resign, Justice Varma refused and was subsequently transferred back to Allahabad High Court without judicial duties.
The government is coordinating with parties on the process, which typically involves forming a parliamentary committee to investigate. However, given the existing SC committee report, the exact procedure is under discussion. The goal is to complete the removal proceedings within the Monsoon session.
